Demonstration officielle HYROX du sandbag lunges
What it's for
A versatile piece of kit (carry, shoulder, lunges) whose unstable load (shifting sand) adds a core-bracing challenge that rigid loads like dumbbells or kettlebells don't have. Used notably on the lunge station. What it trains: glutes and quads on lunges, constant anti-rotation bracing to control an unstable load, traps and core on the shoulder carry.
How to use it
Place it high on the shoulder or in front of the body as instructed, never resting on the lower back. Keep the trunk braced to limit the sand shifting around rather than fighting it with every step. Switch shoulders halfway if the distance is long, to balance the load.
The bag's unstable placement demands more bracing discipline than an equivalent rigid load. Check the straps/handles before heavy use, they wear out fast.
Benefits
Functional core strength that transfers to everyday life (carrying asymmetric loads), strengthening stabilizer muscles that guided loads often neglect.
Optimal preparation
A few loaded steps with a light bag to get used to the shifting weight before the real working load.
Pairs well with
- Lunge Lane
The sandbag is the load used on the lunge station.
- Farmer's Carry Handles
Unstable carry vs. stable carry: alternate in training to vary the type of core bracing.
